Fireworks Sales Permit and License Information

The Fourth of July and fireworks go hand-in-hand for many people. While beautiful to behold, fireworks can be very dangerous.

The District of Columbia regulates fireworks sales and two agencies have primary responsibility for making sure fireworks are sold and enjoyed in a safe and legal manner — the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) and DC Fire & Emergency Medical Services Department (FEMS).

All businesses that store or sell fireworks — in a temporary or permanent structure — must have posted a valid Basic Business License and Certificate of Occupancy — both issued by DCRA. Businesses also need to have a posted firework permit and pass an inspection from the FEMS Fire Prevention Division.

Urgent Notice: DCRA is no longer accepting applications for business licenses for fireworks sales. There will be no exceptions to the deadline on Noon on Friday, June 26, 2009. We strongly urge all customers to come apply for the license as soon as possible as you will need to have two required inspections completed before sales can begin.

Any approved business licenses will be valid from June 20, 2009 through July 5, 2009.

DCRA strongly recommends reviewing all the materials below to begin collecting the necessary approvals and required documentation process in order to help you or your business legally sell or store fireworks during the holiday season.
