Elevator Safety and Regulation  

The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs is responsible for the inspection and approval of all elevators in the District. Select from the links below for information about elevator safety and regulation.

Legal Authority:  DCMR12/IBC2006
 
All of the categories below (with the exception of Man Lifts) require two annual inspections - one routine inspection with 3rd party certificate of completion report and one for a periodic or annual inspection also with a 3rd party certificate of completion report. They should be within six months of each other (one calendar year). Any deficiencies (for annual or routine) must have an approved re-inspection report.
 
Man Lifts require 12 inspection reports every calendar year to receive a certification.

Clean Hands Certification Form
 
Before an elevator license can be issued, DCRA requires a Clean Hand Certification from the Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) at 941 North Capitol Street, First Floor.
